With its recent unveiling of the Xbox One, Microsoft gave the world a glimpse at the future of home entertainment. Far from being just a console that plays video games, this machine seeks to be the one box that controls all home entertainment.
As a device that plays live TV, accesses the internet, plays video games, plays Blu-Rays, and stores content, the Xbox One will be the only system you need to control all your entertainment options. This has ramifications not just for the cable companies, but for all fans of the NFL and fantasy football.
One thing the Xbox One seeks to do is effortlessly allow users to cycle between channels or between inputs with just a voice command. This means that a person can be watching TV then, with just a few words, be Skyping with a friend across the country.
With its simplicity and numerous options, a person will no longer need to switch inputs between a cable box, video game console, and DVD or Blu-Ray player. With just one box, all of those options will be available and will reduce the hassle one finds when needing to switch between devices.
Under the Hood
The Xbox One is the most advanced consoles ever created. With an 8 core CPU, 8GB of RAM, and 500GB of hard drive space, it truly leaves all other system behind. With this amount of RAM and this amount of hard drive space, it will be easy to rip an entire DVD collection and store it one the Xbox One.
And this amount of RAM will mean that all streaming options will be easily available for people to watch. It will be seamlessly integrated with Netflix and Hulu Plus, allowing for user to watch their favorite movies or shows through a few voice commands.
The Kinect software is also getting a major upgrade. The new depth sensor is three times as sensitive as the previous Kinect and can pick out things as subtle as a heartbeat or a shirt flapping in the wind. It also makes the Kinect completely responsive to things such as slight hand motions or the shrug of the shoulders.
Now, the Kinect will completely and accurately reflect the motions of the user in a way that has never been seen before. The new 1080p camera makes Skyping crystal clear. The new Kinect will truly make the Xbox One a more responsive device and integrate the user into a game in a way that has literally never been done before.
Of Course the Best of Console Gaming
All the best game developers are also lining up to create titles for the Xbox One. Popular games like Call of Duty and the Madden franchise will be available immediately with graphics that are truly unparalleled. Now, with details like sweat dripping off the forehead and bruises forming in real time, a player will have a hard time differentiating between reality and the video game.
These titles will be completely responsive to what is happening in the game and will be updated accordingly. And with updates occurring constantly through the Xbox Live network, players will constantly get new level and updated rosters, making even old games completely fresh.
The Affect on the Fantasy Football Experience
All this is great, but many of you are asking: what will this do for me as a fantasy football fan? The answer is that the integration of Xbox One with fantasy football will make the football watching experience better than it has ever been. Because this device will be connected to the TV and to the internet, it will make watching football games while tracking your fantasy teams easier than ever.
With just a few voice commands or just a few clicks of a button, a person will be able to switch between games while also seeing exactly how well (or poorly) their team is doing that day. No more constantly checking your phone or tablet to see what’s going on. With the Xbox One, your team will be right in front of you at all times.
While the game is on TV a person can pull the internet up and check their fantasy team without switching away from the game, or they may have their fantasy team scores update through pop-ups on screen during live TV also while games are being played.
The Xbox One might have just fired the first salvo in the war against cable and satellite providers. While things like Roku, Apple TV, and others have sought to provide streaming content to the TV, this is the first device that really works to give the user just one device to integrate all the services into one interface.
And since it has the deep pockets of Microsoft behind it and carries the trusted Xbox name, there is no doubt that this device will prove extremely popular and have customers asking why no one has ever tried to integrate everything before into one interface.
This could truly change the way we watch sports with the integration of fantasy stats and real-time on screen updates, much like instant replay and the yellow first down line has changed the TV experience in the past.
TV Integration Limitations
The one limitation to this device is that it still requires a cable or satellite subscription in order to get live TV. The Xbox One uses a pass through HDMI port which will not get rid of the cable or satellite box, but, according to reports, should make accessing the cable box independently a thing of the past.
Microsoft could be exploring other options which would allow TV programming to be provided over the internet, such as subscription TV over IP coming out from Intel later this year. This means that a device that easily integrates live TV and the internet is even more valuable. And no device on the market will make it so easy or offer the same quality as an Xbox One for doing this.
The Xbox One will make it easier than ever to watch your fantasy team’s score updated instantly. For avid fantasy football players, the Xbox One will truly be a game changer. For another review of the Xbox One check out this article about Hot Holiday Gifts for 2013.
